Wohlen bei Bern is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Wohlen has an area of 36.2 km2 (14.0 sq mi). Of this area, 55% is used for agricultural purposes, while 32.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 8.1% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.3%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[3]

Demographics

Wohlen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 8,920.[1] As of 2007, 7.2% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 2.8%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (92.2%), with French being second most common ( 1.8%) and Italian being third ( 0.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 26.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (22.7%), the FDP (20.8%) and the Green Party (16.6%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.2% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.3%. In Wohlen about 85% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Wohlen has an unemployment rate of 1.57%. As of 2005, there were 322 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 117 businesses involved in this sector. 231 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 53 businesses in this sector. 1052 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 175 businesses in this sector.[3]

Sights

The Hofenmühle, an 18th century water mill, is located south of the main settlement, in the small Hofen hamlet.
